Ella is a small town in the Badulla District of Uva Province, draped across a ridge of the central highlands at 1,041 metres above sea level. The Gap — a dramatic V-shaped break in the hill range — frames a sweeping view all the way to the southern plains and, on very clear mornings, a sliver of the Indian Ocean. This view, framed by the veranda of almost every guesthouse in town, has made Ella one of Sri Lanka's most beloved destinations.
The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of manicured tea estates, misty pine forests, and rocky mountain trails. Ella Rock — a 3-hour round-trip hike through tea bushes and cloud forest — rewards with a summit view that rivals anything in the country. Little Adam's Peak, gentler and closer to town, is equally popular for sunrise, with wooden steps carved up through the tea gardens. Both hikes are best done in the early morning before afternoon clouds roll in from the plains.
The Nine Arches Bridge — a colonial-era viaduct of dressed stone built without steel or concrete during World War I — is Ella's most photographed landmark. Perched 24 metres above a forested gorge, it is most dramatic when the blue-and-red Colombo–Badulla train rolls across it at 9:18 am and again around 3:30 pm. Visitors stand on the rocky ledges below or on the surrounding ridge paths to photograph the moment the train emerges from the tunnel.
The scenic train journey itself — from Kandy to Ella (or vice versa) — is consistently rated one of the world's greatest rail journeys. The 6-hour route passes through Nanu Oya, Pattipola (the highest station in Sri Lanka at 1,897 m), and Demodara before descending to Ella, winding through tunnels, over viaducts, and past tea estates dripping in mist. St. John Tours reserves window seats and observation deck positions for all highland rail journeys.
Ella rewards every visitor differently. Here are the defining experiences our guides will help you see, feel, and understand.
A masterpiece of colonial stone engineering built in 1921 — best photographed from below or from the surrounding jungle paths as the morning train crosses at 9:18 am.
A moderately challenging 3-hour return trek through tea estates and cloud forest to an approx. 1,350 m rocky summit with panoramic views of the surrounding hill country.
A shorter, easier hike (1.5 hrs return) popular for sunrise — wooden steps climb through immaculate tea gardens to a summit ridge with views to the south plains.
The famous V-shaped gap in the hills, visible from the town centre and most guesthouses. On clear mornings the plains below turn gold before the valley mist rises.
One of the world's great train rides — the Kandy–Ella route (6 hrs) passes through tunnels, viaducts, and high-altitude tea country at a pace that makes every window a painting.
Guided walks through working tea estates where you can watch pluckers at work, learn the full Orthodox process in a factory, and taste freshly made single-estate teas.
Book train tickets weeks in advance — the Kandy–Ella route (train 1005 or 1015) sells out fast. Book via Exporail or ask St. John Tours.
Second-class reserved carriages offer the best balance of comfort and views; the observation saloon is the premium choice.
Ella Rock hike: start no later than 6 am to reach the summit before clouds obscure the view.
The Nine Arches bridge trains pass at approximately 9:18 am and 3:30 pm — timings vary seasonally.
Bring a light waterproof jacket — rain can arrive suddenly even in dry season at this elevation.
Most restaurants and cafés are clustered along Ella's single main road; Curd and Treacle (buffalo curd with kithul palm treacle) is a local must-try.
